Sir,
With reference to your letter No.5779 of the
15th February 1916, transmitting a copy of a letter from
the United States' Consul-General relative to the
registration by the American Express Company of a tele-
graphic address in Hong Kong, I am directed to acquaint
you for the information of Mr. Secretary Bonar Law that
the use of telegraphic addresses registared since the
outbreak of war is prohibited and it is feared that to
make an exception in favour of a foreign company would
lead to demands for a similar concession by many British
Firms which it would be exceedingly difficult to refuse.
It is regretted therefore that there is no
alternative but to ask the American Express Company to instruct inform their correspondents to use their full address at
Hong Kong, but in the meantime British Censors will be
advised that telegrams addressed to Amexco Hong Kong, should
not for the present be stopped on that account.
I have the honour to ba,
Sir
Your obedient Servant,
e Under Secretary of State,
Colonial Office.
